What to Prepare For Your Day on the Water

Kelowna Boat News and Tips
There are so many activities you can do on a pontoon boat with your family.

There are so many activities you can do on a pontoon boat with your family.

We know that cruising the water is one of the best activities you can do in the Okanagan. But why stop there?! You can bring several fun games and toys for the whole family to enjoy while you spend your afternoon on the water. Not all water sports have to be extreme like ski-surfing, water skating, or water paragliding. Rent a pontoon boat, grab some playing cards, load up on snacks, and dust off the fishing tackle and lets have a great day on the lake!

Cave Diving

There are underground tunnels and caves that you can explore beneath the surface of Okanagan Lake. Legend says that Ogopogo made his way through the tunnels and lived in the Squally Point cave. This excursion is for advanced divers, but there are other caves you can explore for every skill level. If you are not feeling that adventurous, you can always snorkel and learn about the local marine life in our lakes.

Things you will need to bring:

  • Mask
  • Snorkel
  • Float vest
  • Wetsuit
  • Fins
  • Diving Gear
  • Dive Flag
  • Underwater camera
  • Underwater flashlight

Did someone say Brunch?!

Bring on the lounging lifestyle with a pontoon boat rental. When you are not in a rush, you can stop and enjoy the scenery around you. Start with a sunrise cruise around the lake and find yourself a cozy cove. Get out the french press, serve fresh Okanagan fruit, and lay out the local pastries to start your day off to a delicious start!

Things you will need to bring:

  • Fruit from a local orchard
  • Scones and pastries
  • Smoked lox
  • Bagels and cream cheese
  • Orange juice
  • Sparkling water
  • Biodegradable soap

Fishing and Tackle

Now is as good of a time as any to bond with your kids and troll the lake. The Okanagan Lake hosts a wide variety of fish to catch and release. You can anticipate Kokanee, Lake Whitefish, Burbot, and Rainbow Trout will be interested in your lures. The more variety of tackle you bring on the boat, the greater your success at catching a prize fish to take photos of and share on your social media! Be aware that Okanagan Lake has a barbless hook restriction. Follow all of the guidelines provided by the provincial government to keep our fisheries healthy.

What you will need to bring:

  • Fishing rods
  • Wide-brimmed hat
  • Biodegradable sunscreen
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Fishing License
  • Tackle and bait
  • Fishing net
  • Pliers

Fun In The Sun

Are you looking for more of an all-around family tour of the lake? Make sure to bring games, floaties, and an upbeat lake playlist! Sometimes you have to jump in with both feet and make a splash. There are many gaming options with waterproof cards, board games, floaties, or even clearing off some space on deck for a dance floor!

What you will need to bring:

  • Phone or waterproof Bluetooth speaker with all of your downloaded music
  • Twister
  • Playing cards
  • Biodegradable sunscreen
  • Floaties
  • Extra clothes and towels
