Kelowna Kayak Rentals vs. Paddleboard vs. Boat: Which Is Right for Your Group?
There's a moment that happens a lot at the dock on Bernard Ave, where someone in the group opens up the rentals page on their phone and goes quiet. They booked this trip thinking they knew what they wanted, and now they're not so sure. Kelowna kayak rentals, paddleboards, and speedboats are all available from the same spot on Okanagan Lake, but what’s the right choice for your crew?
So before you get here and have that moment, here's how to think it through.
Quick Answer: Kayaks and paddleboards suit small groups (1-5 people-ish) who want a slower, physical experience close to the Kelowna waterfront. Powerboats fit groups of any size who want to cover distance on Okanagan Lake, tow water toys, or stay out all day. Mixed groups with kids often end up happier on a bowrider or pontoon where everyone's on the same boat.
Kelowna Kayak Rentals
A single kayak is the lowest-commitment option on the dock, and that's part of the appeal. Rentals start at $25* for the early-morning hour (8-10 AM) and go up to $75* (disclaimer - all of these prices are *as of May 2026) for a four-hour block, no boating licence required, and staff will walk you through it before you head out.
Okanagan Lake is 3-5 km wide and 230 metres at its deepest, and it often gets windy in the afternoon. In other words, she ain’t a pond. First-timers who book a 2 PM slot and paddle out past the boardwalk sometimes have a harder time getting back than they expected. If you book early and stay close to shore, a kayak is one of the better ways to spend a Kelowna morning, because the view from water level looking back at the hills is worth it.
Kayaks work great for solo travellers, couples, people who want to be on the water without committing to a full boat, and anyone pairing a paddle with time on the waterfront boardwalk. Not the move for big groups, families with kids, or any booking after noon on choppy waters.
Kelowna Paddleboard Rentals (SUP): Same Price, Different Skill
Kelowna stand-up paddleboard rentals run the same pricing as kayaks, $25* for an early-morning hour to $75* for four hours. If you've paddleboarded before and the lake is calm, there's nothing quite like it in the morning. Glassy water, no engine noise, and a full-body workout that doesn't feel like one until the day after.
Two things worth knowing before you book… Paddleboarding in chop is a genuinely different skill than paddleboarding on flat water, and Okanagan Lake in the afternoon can make a beginner's session pretty miserable, pretty fast. If anyone in your group hasn't done it before, the 8-10 AM window is the one you want, or a kayak is the more forgiving call. The other thing: a SUP board fits 1 person. You can't bring a kid, a friend, or a dog the way you're probably picturing it.
Long story short: Paddleboards are good for adults who've done it before, solo or tiny-group bookings, and mornings.
Kelowna Boat Rentals: All Lake All Day
A motorboat opens up a completely different lake. On a kayak, you get the waterfront. On a bowrider, wakesurf, wakeboard or pontoon, the full 135 kilometres from Vernon to Penticton is yours, and that means Rattlesnake Island, Bertram Creek, Bear Creek Provincial Park, docking at Hotel Eldorado for lunch and coming back, all of it a normal day on a boat rental, not an expedition.
Downtown Marina's bowrider fleet starts at $199* for an early-morning hour (or $219* at standard rates), and if wakesurfing is the reason you're in Kelowna, the MasterCraft XT22 and XT23 are what wake riders want to be behind (tournament-grade boats, the kind people plan trips specifically for). Pontoon boats seat up to 16, which is where the birthday groups, bachelorette parties, and family reunions land, and it's easy to see why (Note: As of May 2026 we do not have any pontoon boats in our fleet this season)
You don't need a boating licence. Orientation is included. Lifejackets are on board for every passenger, kids and dogs too, and the dock staff walk you through everything before you leave. No experience required.

When Your Group Is Split on What to Rent
One person wants to kayak. The rest want to tube behind a speedboat. This comes up constantly, and the answer is almost always: book a boat!
A bowrider lets you cut the engine in a calm bay, jump in the water, and float… and floating in the middle of Okanagan Lake is the part of the kayak fantasy people are chasing anyway. Tubes, wakeboards, and water skis are available first-come at the dock and come at a discount with any boat rental.
If budget is driving the paddle-versus-boat debate, run the numbers first. 4 kayak rentals for 4 hours is $300*. The entry-level bowrider for the same 4-hour block is $669*. For 2 people, kayaks win on cost, no question. But split a bowrider among 6 or more and the per-person number comes down considerably, and the group is together instead of scattered across the bay.

FAQ
Q: Do I need experience to rent a kayak or paddleboard in Kelowna?
A: No experience required for either, and staff will walk you through it at the dock before you go. Kayaks are more forgiving than paddleboards, especially if it's your first time. The one thing worth knowing: Okanagan Lake can get choppy in the afternoon or on windy days.
Q: Can kids come on boat rentals?
A: The minimum renter age is 19, but kids are welcome as passengers on boat rentals. Lifejackets are included for every passenger on board, children and pets included. Families with young kids do better on a bowrider or pontoon, where the kids sit safely and the adult renting handles the boat. Kids under 19 aren’t able to rent their own kayak or paddleboard at Downtown Marina.
Q: What's the best time to kayak or paddleboard on Okanagan Lake?
A: Early morning, without question. The lake is flattest between 8-10 AM before afternoon winds build, and that's also when Downtown Marina's discounted early pricing applies. Book the first available slot if you're set on paddling calm waters, because conditions are meaningfully better, and you'll usually have the waterfront to yourself.
Q: How far can I get on a kayak from Downtown Marina?
A: A one-hour rental gets you a few kilometres from the dock, enough to paddle along the Kelowna waterfront, explore the shoreline near the boardwalk, and get a feel for being on the lake. Okanagan Lake runs 135 km with a maximum depth of 230 metres. To reach spots like Rattlesnake Island, Bear Creek, or Bertram Creek, you need a boat. Those aren't kayak distances.
Downtown Marina has been getting people on Okanagan Lake since 2013, right from the dock at 210 Bernard Ave in downtown Kelowna. Kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, and a full fleet of powerboats, open May through September, seven days a week. No boating licence required!
